Junior Leaders
In 1998
the Southern Tasmanian Netball Association started a junior development program
called ‘Junior Leaders’ with a Grass Roots funding grant from Sport and
Recreation Tasmania.
Sporting bodies are very good at providing development opportunities for talent identified players, however a good portion of participating juniors are not selected for these programs.
Junior Leaders was started so that a greater portion of young members would have an opportunity to be involved with a special program. The first course was a success and the program, now funded through the Association’s affiliated clubs, has become an integral part of the netball pathway.
The
program targets 14 to 17 year olds with the course offering instruction in
coaching, umpiring and club administration. The program is delivered
alongside the Associations main winter roster.
In addition to the course sessions, our Junior Leaders take on hospitality roles for major functions.
The content of the course has evolved over the time it has been running now including units on first aid and accredited courses relating to coaching and umpiring.
Over
one hundred girls have graduated from Junior Leaders with many of those
graduates taking on leadership roles within our clubs and the Association
itself.
Junior Leaders is an investment in the future of our sport.
